Tuchel Expresses Disappointment Over Home Fan Atmosphere Following Dominant Wales Victory.
The England head coach shared his sadness that the England team did not get greater backing from the Wembley spectators during their commanding friendly win against Wales on Thursday night.
Tuchel was happy to see his side maintain their winning momentum, with goals from Rogers, Ollie Watkins, and Bukayo Saka inside the first 20 minutes settling the match. Yet, he was displeased with the atmosphere at the national stadium.
“We had one and a half training days to prepare against a organized team and we did very well,” the coach stated. “It could have been 5-0 up at half-time. We missed the fourth and fifth ones. It was quiet. We didn’t get any energy from the stands. We did everything to win.”
“How much more can you provide in the first quarter? We didn’t let them get away. When you only hear just the Welsh supporters for 30 minutes, it’s regrettable because the squad deserved better encouragement today.”
“I maintain my words. There’s nothing more than being three goals up in a rivalry match. I hoped for a bit more support in moments where it is challenging.”
“After halftime, to get behind us, there was excessive support for Wales. It could have helped us to recharge, but that’s the way it went and so be it.”
Squad Decisions Vindicated by Display
Away from risking a fight with fans, Tuchel also raised eyebrows by leaving out Jude Bellingham and Foden from his squad. Yet the choice was justified by Morgan Rogers delivering another standout performance in the attacking midfield role and netting his maiden goal for his country.
“He is what he is,” the head coach said. “He operates as an attacking midfielder and he is competing for his spot.”
Wales Manager Seeks Improvement from Defeat
Craig Bellamy hopes that Wales, who face Belgium in a important qualifying match on Monday, learn from their awful performance in the opening period.
“That’s the reason I scheduled this match,” the manager said. “I wanted to assess our current level. What are our ambitions? Who do we want to be? This performance fills me with inspiration.”
Injury Concern for Striker
Ollie Watkins was withdrawn at half-time after hitting a goalpost and will be a doubt when the national team play Latvia in Riga in a World Cup qualifying match on Tuesday.
